Blood On My Snert
Some of you might have noticed the Kypski 5 minute mix in our latest podcast. It ended with a mashup of Kypski’s remix on ‘Blood On My Hands’ by Nobody Beats The Drum and Spag Heddy‘s ‘Dubsnert (Kypski Edit)’. With his permission, we made a full version of that mashup and we’ve put it up for free: ‘Blood In My Snert‘.

Born To Die (Mattanoll Remix)
Mattanoll posted his remix on Lana Del Rey’s ‘Born To Die’ two weeks ago. The download link has just recently been unlocked, so here it is now. Nice disco vibe for Lana Del Rey’s depressed vocals. Not sure about the intro, but after a few seconds it is a proper remix that definitely has ‘Mattanoll was here’ written all over it.

Bait & Chardonnay
Another mash, delivered by Duncan Gerow. The instrumental in this track is from ‘Marvin & Chardonnay’ by Big Sean (Also features Kanye West and Roscoe Dash), produced by Andrew Wansel. (Who also produced for Wiz Khalifa and Nicki Minaj). The acapella comes from Wale’s ‘Bait’, both tracks were released last year.
We’ve been speaking with two fantastic dutch producer/performers Kypski and Bas Bron. Also, Le Tracasseur told us about their favorite music and Ben Mono put together a solid guest mix. Tracklists, streams, downloads etc. here. As always, we hope you enjoy. On with today’s tracks:

Dream On
This has been on several people’s mixtapes and podcasts, yet we didn’t have a clue it was actually a free download. Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs is giving away ‘Dream On’ if you subscribe here. After all, T.E.E.D. is one of those artists you should just be subscribed to anyway.

Love Love Love Going Back to Cali
From T.E.E.D. to G.L.U.B., Washington’s mashup artist recently released another cool mixup featuring Notorious BIG and Aeroplane. The instrumental is from Low Motion Disco’s ‘Love Love Love’ in Aeroplane’s remix. On top of that comes Notorious BIG’s ‘Going Back To Cali’ acapella.

Count On It
Kenton Dunson‘s new single is out and up for free: ‘Count On It’. very decent hip-hop production, and Dunson sounds good as per usual. For those of you who didn’t grow up on American television, this is the sample they used. That’s from back in 1976, performed by the Pointer Sisters. Go ask your (grand)parents who they are.

Bad Ponys
Dan Aux sent in something new he crafted. The track features the instrumental version of Ginuwine’s ‘Pony’ (1996), the acapella from M.I.A.’s ‘Bad Girls’ and guitar samples from Fleetwood Mac’s Big Love (the 1997 stripped down version).

Click here to view the embedded video.

Pharaohs (What So Not Re-rub)
And this is a pretty cool Re-rub on SBTRKT and Roses Gabor’s ‘Pharaohs’ by What So Not. To be honest, WSN left a lot of the original in tact and that is why I’m posting this track: the original is just really good. (Posted it above so you can spot the differences.) This one edit might definitely work better in live sets.

Summertime Sadness (Reich & Bleich Remix)
Another day, another Lana Del Rey remix. But hey, at least this one is pretty damn decent. Reich & Bleich (One guy from Germany) remixed ‘Summertime Sadness’. And although it has a pretty sad title, and Lana Del Rey on vocals, I can actually see this being played in a big room. Track relies mostly on a solid ensemble of sidechained synths.

Are You That Somebody (Sango Remix)
Nineties acapellas go really well with that whole bass music genre. Seattle’s Sango delivers proof with his remix on Aaliyah’s ‘Are You That Somebody’. Too bad the acapella sometimes is a bit too soft in comparison to the instrumental. Aw well, if you’re born in the late eighties or early nineties you can probably dream these vocals anyway.

Move Up
One of the best tracks of 2011 plus rap vocals. The Hood Internet was going to do this sooner or later. They’ve caught Phantogram’s ‘Don’t Move’ instrumental version and combined it with Wiz Khalifa’s ‘Up’. And that’s not an easy mashup, as the acapella is pretty melodic. Proper mashup.

Don’t Stop (St. Lucia Remix)
Ending this post with a nice upbeat remix on Foster The People’s ‘Don’t Stop’. This version kinda sorta really sounds like that ‘Bohemian Like You’ track that was used in half a gazillion tv-commercials. By the way, the remixer on this track is NY’s St. Lucia.

Last week Popeska premiered his latest track ‘Super Best Friends’. It established what we’ve been suspecting for quite a while now. Skrillex, meet your match. Popeska is able to produce the same quality of bazerk dubstep tunes. And he’s handing them out like free candy.

What Did I Do (All The Lights Remix)
Most of all, Kele Okeereke’s single ‘What Did I Do’ was a showcase for Lucy Taylor. (Who, for a singer, is pretty damn impossible to Google.) Kele himself was nearly nowhere to be found on the vocals. The track is an easy, heavily Dubstep-influenced Pop track. Australian duo All The Lights sprinkled some of their magic on it. Which results in a nice disco rendition with, most notably, a smooth rolling bassline.

Mixed Messages
One more track by Bastian then. This one’s titled ‘Mixed Messages’ and it’s a bit more up-tempo from most of their work. The band’s front-man Bas Bron can also be found on Soundcloud under his moniker Seymour Bits. There’s a really smooth free track up there titled ‘When Seymour Sleeps‘. This track below is titled ‘Mixed Messages’, from Bastian’s ‘There’s No Such Place‘ album.

Diggin’ Ray Charles
Seems like we’re posting mashups every day now. Today it’s MashMike‘s turn. What’s in a name, right. The German mashuppeteer blends Kanye West’s ‘Gold Digger’ and Chiddy Bang’s ‘Ray Charles’ instrumental. Nice fit, too bad for the poor audio quality at some points.
Just before the weekend, based-in-Holland-born-in-Germany producer WhiteNoise dropped a new remix. A pretty heavy one. He took on Awolnation’s ‘Sail’, from the remix contest that ran in August and September of last year.
Touch & Go
More music by the Dutch band Bastian, a project by producer Bas Bron and some of his closest friends. The second free track from their album ‘There’s No Such Place‘ is titled ‘Touch & Go’. A proper electro-funk-rocker, with some serious Lenny Kravitzness going on at 1.21. More about Bastian soon, look out for them on the upcoming Jackplug podcast.

A Conversation Between Time & Pride
Treekeeper is a 19-years-old producer from Nashville, TN currently living in Burlington, NC. Together with Louisville rapper Macro he has a pretty interesting EP up on Soundcloud titled ‘Welcome to Bohemia’. (Follow through and listen to the entire EP. It’s worth the exactly 20 minutes of your time.) One track on the EP is titled ‘A Conversation Between Time & Pride’, it’s featured below. Proof that the EP is pretty damn brilliant both lyrically and musically.

California Rain
Our latest discovery in an ever growing pool mashup kids is Toronto-based NoteGeek. He does a fine job at mashing op uber-corny pop songs. Though we might not be the biggest fans of the music he uses, we admit these mashups are just really really smooth. His latest mixdown is a good example. Katy Perry’s ‘California Girls’ acapella over Adele’s ‘Set Fire To The Rain’ instrumentals. Everybody’s mother’s mother will recognize this.

We Found Love (Kid Smpl Remix)
Seattle’s Kid Smpl delivers a pretty deep rendition on Rihanna’s ‘We Found Love’. The entire idea of this being a ‘radio song’ is ripped out, and instead Simpl sets a pretty unique atmosphere with just a few lines from the original acapella and aditional synths. Good idea, great job, awesome vibe.

Tenderly (Melé Remix)
And literally seconds ago while I was writing this, Annie Mac uploaded her weekly ‘Annie Mac presents..’ track. This week she’s promoting a fantastic remix by Melé on ‘Tenderly’ by Disclosure. So in true tradition of annoying Facebook comments: FIRST.
Just found this very nice recording titled ‘Mr. Quiche’ by a three-headed L.A. based group named Wildcat! Wildcat!. (Jesse Taylor, Michael Wilson & Jesse Carmichael.) The band is part of a creative collective called ‘Black Eye Music’, which all revolves around band-member Wilson and the collaborations he does with friends. This is one of two tracks they have published on Soundcloud, buy you’ll probably like both of them.

B4 The Night Is Thru (FS Green ElectroLove Remix)
Have been meaning to post this for a while. (Steve‘s been telling me to post this over and over, I keep forgetting ) A month ago, Amsterdam’s FS Green remixed Jesse Boykins III‘ ‘B4 The Night Is Thru’. We know FS Green for his different styles of production. In the past months we’ve seen him producing Hip Hop, a little bit of Moombahton, Dubstep and more. This remix leans a bit more towards a way-past-midnight-kinda-house music.

Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings
London record label Bella Union is introducing a pretty cool new act on their website. His name is Father John Misty and the label is pushing his track ‘Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings’. FJM has got an album coming up on April 30th, titled ‘Fear Fun’.

Nye Nummer Et
Another label, NYC based Ghostly International, is pushing a band called Choir of Young Believers. They’re a Danish band of seven from Copenhagen. Their album ‘Rhine Gold’ will be out March 20th on Ghostly, and the label is giving away two track if you go here.

Summit (Shy KidX remix)
And finally we post another Skrillex remix. It’s been a while. Italian duo Shy KidX took on ‘Summit’ from Skrillex’ ‘Bangarang EP’. (That one track with a few seconds of Ellie Goulding in it, you know..) The result is a (relatively short, 3.53) crunchy dubstep/drum’n'bass hybrid. This ought to wake you up from hibernation.

In a recent radio show we interviewed Dutch disco duo Keljet, and they praised the heck out of Gigamesh. They were absolutely right, as the Minneapolis producer is on an absolute winning streak. Today he releases his latest remix, on ‘Tongue Tied’ by Grouplove. (He spelled it as ‘Tounge Tied’ though. Did he just Gigamisspell, or did we?)

Youth (Adventure Club Dubstep Remix)
Sounds like there’s a hint of Flux Pavilion in Adventure Club‘s latest remix. The Canadian remixers have just released their remix on ‘Youth’ by a young femme from the UK named Foxes. Is that synth a VST preset or did they actually tweak a synth into sounding all Pavilionish?

Did I just end two praragraphs with a question?

Culture Of Fear
Five new tracks today, starting with an all-time favorite: Thievery Corporation. It’s already been 15 years ago since the Washington duo dropped their debut album ‘Sounds from the Thievery Hi-Fi’. But their music has proven to be timeless. At the moment they’re working on a new site on which you can follow them and there’s even some free music in it for the followers. Their first present is ‘Culture Of Fear’, with Mr. Lif on vocals. Be sure to follow them!

The Human Condition (Sharooz Remix)
London producer Sharooz delivers a good remix on the extravagant singer/songwriter from Oakland, Jhameel. The track he used is ‘The Human Condition’. Sharooz created a great (housey) rework on the track. But still, the thing that does it for this track is Jhameel’s vocal.

Winter In America
The video above was shot in the early nineties in London, when Gil Scott-Heron performed his ‘Winter In America’. Below is a rework on this track, released by (also London) label 2morrow Victory Records. Performing artist is one of the label’s signees, J’Danna.

Spoken word
One of our disco heroes of the moment, Lancelot, came up with a new track today. He named it ‘Spoken Word’, altough it features absolutely no vocals. What is does feature are fantastic piano keys on a high quality production that hovers somewhere between recent nu-disco and that nineties disco/house flavour.

Let’s Make History
And finally one more disco track by Chicago’s Sam Padrul. His biography reads: ‘Emerging from his mother’s womb with a keyboard already in clutch, Sam Padrul’s head was oozing with music from the beginning.’ Couldn’t help but visualize at that point. Must have been quite a painful pregnancy. And how the hell did they wire that thing? Anyway, we believe the birth itself went well because Padrul and his placenta-covered Yamaha are on Soundcloud making awesome music. His latest track is titled ‘Let’s Make History’.
This is a chopped&screwed kind of thing, we’ve been seeing a lot of those in the past few months. After a few late night production sessions, these two tracks came out. This first one was just finished a few moments ago. It’s a take on Little Boots’s ‘Earthquake’. The voice you’re hearing is a double track, pitched down two times separately so it sounds like two people are singing. Download options is switched on for the ones who like it.

At Night (ft. Kid Cudi & E-Dubble)
This second project is already a few months old, but we haven’t come around to posting it yet. It’s Kid Cudi’s ‘Day & Night’ pitched down and E-Dubble’s ‘Get On Board’ unpitched. Both the instrumental productions are originals works we’ve done ourselves. So we hope you enjoy.
Live On An Island (Nat Self’s Romance Edit)
Yesterday Sloth Boogie Blog hosted a party in London titled ‘FlinkMaPingo’. (Hope they had a good time!) For the evening they invited Nat Self, who is part of Zombie Disco Squad. SBB sent out an invitation for their party with a few additional downloads. One of those downloads was the Nat Self Edit on The Whitest Boy Alive‘s ‘Live On An Island’. You can download it here.

Together (Thand Remix)
Science fact about the ‘Epic Electro-House Banger‘. Ten out of ten times, that’s a term you can interpret as a warning. It means the track you’re about to hear is not very well-produced or innovative. It will probably be very remotely related to House music. It will definitely not bang anything. And it will be far from epic.

That being said, you’re about to listen to a pretty epic Electro-House banger. But it’s not as bad as it may sound. Thand is a Swedish producer, and the whole Electro vs. Progressive House is kind of his thing. He remixed Axwell & Ingrosso’s ‘Together’.

The remix starts out with beats and basslines, usual stuff. Then goes into first breakdown, which features the original vocals, additional synths and of course some white noise which builds up until 1.47. At that point I was preparing for a shitty drop and a massive facepalm, neither one happened. Thand actually put some pretty interesting synths in there. This is a pretty good remix, and maybe the production didn’t even need the vocals. I have to withdraw my statement. The sorta-’epic Electric-House Banger’-thingy can still work. (One out of a hundred times, but still.) Well played, mr. Thand.

Brother
This is just too bad. Today we tried to feature Matt Corby‘s ‘Brother’, one of the best songs we’ve heard in a while. This morning the file was downloadable (Uncompressed WAV-file), but not embeddable. This evening, it’s exactly the other way around. So although this isn’t downloadable, here it is anyway. The original version of ‘Brother’. Will update if the download link comes back up. If you like Matt Corby, he is giving away more fantastic music if you subscribe to his website.

Fair Warning (Oliver Remix)
It’s been exactly one human pregnancy ago since Oliver uploaded their remix on Penguin Prison’s ‘Fair Warning’. And the production sounds like it was made roughly 40 pregnancies ago. (you do the math.) But it’s hardly longer than a one-night-stand ago that Oliver actually unlocked the download link on that remix. So posting it now:

I Couldn’t Reach You
By now I think all of you are pretty familiar with the “Facebook-like-to-dowload-my-track’ concept. Artists attach much value to a large following on their social media pages. So if you follow them, some of them like to give a free track in return. A pretty cool concept, and it has been around for a while now. Rosie And Me sorta do the same thing. Except they take it one step further. It’s more like a ‘Facebook-like-to-download-our-entire-friggin-album‘ type of deal. And it’s a recent album too, titled ‘Arrow Of My Ways’.

Now about the album, I think it’s best not to listen to music with an idea of how it actually ‘should’ sound. (Raised expectations by a previous EP or album.) But this album isn’t the same as their debut ‘Bird and Whale’ EP. It’s much more Country influenced, and somehow it doesn’t have as much energy and playfulness as their first EP. Rosie (Rosanne Machado) has a fragile voice and she sings beautiful fragile songs. ‘Arrow Of My Ways’ is good, different, and sadder than I expected. But to be honest, Lana Del Rey still has the sad-market pretty much covered right now.

English Roses
On to London based singer/songwriter David Lyre. He has quite a few free tracks up on Soundcloud. So if you enjoy this track below, do go and check out his Soundcloud profile. This particular track is titled ‘English Roses’ and was uploaded last week.
This is already a few months old but we found it through a Lancelot remix that was posted a few days ago. The track is titled ‘Brother’, written and performed by Sydney’s Matt Corby. (Who at times sounds like the Australian version of James Vincent Mcmorrow.) Be sure to check his other tracks on Soundcloud too, you won’t regret. Unfortunately we’re not able to embad the original version from Soundcloud, but the Lancelot remix is about just as awesome.

Lost In You (DarkElixer Remix)
We know DarkElixer mostly by his rougher dubstep productions. He’s a UK producer from Manchester generating quite a lot of plays on his music through blogs, forums and quite a following on his social media pages. One of his latest remixes, ‘Lost In You’, departs from the usual rowdy stuff and focuses more on vocals and chords. It’s a remix on Dusky & Janai, who launched a remix contest on their track in October last year.

Maps
The Home Recordings is a solo project by Simsbury (CT) based Mark Sheary. He’s an American Air Force employee who records some really good folk music in his free time. His latest recording is a good example of what he’s capable of. It’s titled ‘Maps’.

Ice Black
Baobinga and Guido are two Bristol based producers who joined forces on this track ‘Ice Black’. Hip-hop paced track that has that future bass music kind of thing to it. And a great track for longer radio mixes.
November last year saw the release of ‘There’s No Such Place‘, an album by Dutch electronic/funk band Bastian. They’ve put some tracks up on Soundcloud for free downloads to promote the album. And their page is really worth checking out. One of those tracks on there is titled ‘Impress You’. Does what is says it does.

I Like It Like That (Vanguard Remix)
Vanguard is a producer from Carfiff, UK. We know him for his heavily eighties influenced electropop. Which is exactly how to describe his latest remix on Hot Chelle Rae’s ‘I Like It Like That’. Big synths and snares from the eighties. Remix comes with an awesome surprise at the end of the production.

Like This
TCTS is Sam O’Neill, a producer from Manchester, UK. TCTS stand for ‘The Clock, The Storm‘, which is the name of his band and also one of the first bands we ever wrote about. Under the shortened moniker TCTS, O’Neill produces IDM and over the years his productions have definitely grown a lot. In the past few months he’s been experimenting with that House/Garage/BassMusic-kind-of-sound that came up in 2011. This is his latest track, titled ‘Like This’.

Ohio (Monsieur Adi Remix)
Monsieur Adi just went extra Pro on his Soundcloud account. Pro as in: bought some extra room to store his tracks. Which means all of his remixes are up online. The download link on his most recent remix of Justice’s ‘Ohio’ isn’t active on Soundcloud yet but Disco Demons have the exclusive download link, so you can get it over there. For all of Adi’s remixes, visit his remix set on Soundcloud.

Sirens
New free Skizzy Mars track out today. Well, almost new. One year ago he already posted a version on Tumblr. The track is titled Sirens, produced by J. Fink. But the new version has some new Skizzy raps on it. And rumor is he’s posting another free track within the next few days.

Scale it back (The Archive’s Waltz)
By the end of 2011 Dj Shadow was wrapping up the remix contest he hosted on his track ‘Scale It Back’ (ft. Little Dragon). We came across one of the 6 winning tracks on Soundcloud today and this is definitely a personal favorite. The artist who remixed the track is a producer from spain called The Archive. His remix won 5th place in the contest, ending up at number 6 on the free remix EP that was released after the contest. (Dj Shadow picked 2 number ones.)

Katie Cruel (Feltman & Badutski Remix)
Danish collab by CK Feltman and Badutski. They made an edit on fellow Danish singer Agnes Obel and her recent folk cover ‘Katie Cruel’ (released in 2011 on her ‘Philharmonics’ album). The entire album is very worth checking out, but also enjoy this free download for now. Good way to put Agnes Obel in a deeper dj-set.
Wonders (VISITOR Remix)
Pet Shop Boys, anyone? But seriously, this is one of those tracks that needs a few times listening, but after a while you’ll be really glad you did. London-based rock band Visitor remixes ‘Visitor’ by the Stockholm duo The Sound Of Arrows.

If you’re into podcasts or longer dj mixes, you might like this first Jackplug Radio Show we did last weekend. Stream + Full Tracklist + Downloads are up here. It features a one-hour guest mix by Michael Brun, Keljet‘s favorite ten tracks of the month (Dutch interview though, sorry) and short five-minute showcases by Mattanoll and Katy B. We hope you enjoy.

My Family (ALB Remix)
Mattanoll’s Five Minute Mix featured this one nice track we had never heard before. It’s a remix from 2010 on French singer/songwriter Kim‘s ‘My Family’. The remix was produced by ALB who, like Mattanoll, is also based in Reims, France.

Femme Fatale
Feels really odd saying “Hey, remember Sky Ferreira?”. She’s only turning 20 this summer, but we heard (and posted) about her in December of 2009. A year before that, she already had some music up on Myspace. (“Hey, remember Myspace?”)
Since that time she’s had a few single releases and a 5-track EP in 2011. But the summer of ’12 should have a Sky Ferreira debut album in store for us. Until then, you can enjoy this free song she put up on Soundcloud titled ‘Femme Fatale’. It’s from that old Myspace page.

January Love
Not so long ago, a Stockholm duo named Newtimers debuted their first track on Soundcloud titled ‘Falling’. The track sounded like Jamie Woon meets.. well, Jamie Woon. In a good way.
Last week their second track was uploaded and it’s titled ‘January Love’. After hearing it, it’s safe to say Newtimers aren’t a one-time thing. We predict they might be dropping some really pleasant EP’s (Maybe even albums) in the near future.

Falling Down
Happy to find this Sub Focus original uploaded by his label RAM Records. It´s a free dubstep track titled ´Falling Down´ and it features vocals by Kenzie May. There´s a long (looong) list of dubstep producers at the moment, Sub Focus is definitely on that small part on the list that’s still worth listening to.
With it’s long buildups, piano chords and the remarkable vocals by N&TD it does really sound like that one awesome Magician remix on Lykke Li from last year. But bygones be bygones, this remix is great. And Goldroom definitely has a bright 2012 in front of him. Also: there a pretty tight Keljet remix out on Goldroom’s ‘Nights In Nantes’, available here.
You Know You Like It (Riton Rerub)
Recently we posted about AlunaGeorge, and how they’re great at remixing other artists. It also works the other way around too. London’s Riton made a great Re-rub on AG’s ‘You Know You Like It’. The original (above) is deeper, and extremely pleasant to listen to: Works better for radio. Riton’s Rerub is the remix for livesets, and definitely a great addition to an already pretty impressive list of ´You Know You Like It´ remixes.

Deny Strings
Five days ago The Hood Internet put up some new stuff on their Soundcloud page. Two mashups to be exact, a Mayor Hawthorne special. The first mashup consists out of: Fabulous and Nate Dogg’s ‘Can’t Deny’ (acapella, with parts pitched down) and an instrumental Classix remix on Mayor Hawthorne’s ‘No Strings’. Especially well played by adding the sung part of the acapella to the instrumental track.

One Midnight With You
Their second mashup also features Mayor Hawthorne, on vocals this time. The ‘No Strings’ acapella lays very well on top of M83′s ‘Midnight City’. Be sure to follow Hood Internet on Soundcloud, they’re getting pretty close to 500 mashups.

Lonely By Your Side (Acoustic)
Zoot Woman also has two new free tracks up on Soundcloud. They have been recording some acoustic studio sessions on their tracks ‘Lonely By Your Side’ and ‘Snow White‘. Better be quick to download these. Zoot Woman downloads usually don’t stay up very long. Here’s that first track:

Do The Same (VIP)
Brittish duo Mak & Pasteman have a new EP coming up titled ‘Do The Same’. Defenitely an EP for UK garage/househeads. The leading track on the EP features cuts from Bruno Mars’ ‘Grenade’. (The EP also features cuts from other house pellas on every track.) For that one track, M&P have released a free VIP remix on Soundcloud.

Adderall Admiral
An older mistape that we hadn’t discovered yet. Five months ago Danny Brown released his tape ‘XXX‘ through Fool’s Gold Records. Danny Brown is a Detroit rapper with an unnerving voice and clever lyrics. He’s at his best when rapping over slightly weird productions like this one:

Walking With Giants
Bruce and Erica Driscoll are a nice bro and sis duo from NYC called Blondfire. They write indie-pop tunes that’s most notable for their catchy vocals. Their latest track on Soundcloud was posted a few days ago and is titled ‘Walking With Giants’.

Born To Die (AlunaGeorge Remix)
American Dream reference, lip reference, something about an earlier solo career. By now, you’ve probably read a few Lana Del Rey posts before. Anyway, we can still appreciate her somewhat depressing voice from time to time. Especially in this AlunaGeorge remix. They are a duo from London who make fantastic remixes and put them on Soundcloud for free downloads. Follow!
Hold On (Live Version)
Apparently SBTRKT played a live session at the BBC Radio 1′s Live Lounge today. Young Turks, the label of SBTRKT, The XX and Jack Penate (+ more) uploaded two track from the live session on Soundcloud. One of the tracks is ‘Hold On’ from SBTRKT’s self-titled album. The live version is twice as long as the album version. But as if it were a good old long-player, it stays interesting untill the last second.

Blue Cassette
The other track uploaded by Young Turks is titled ‘Blue Cassette’. It’s SBTRKT’s cover on Friendly Fires, the track originally comes from the Friendly Fires’ second album ‘Pala’. The track is perfect for Aaron Jerome’s voice, giving it an entirely different atmosphere.

Dizzle
This original is over 8 months old, but this week the download option got unlocked. Good reason to re-visit ARTK‘s Soundcloud page. The track is titled ‘Drizzle’ and fits that Bass Music/House/Garage we’re hearing a lot lately. Very strong production.

Around The World (Richard Earnshaw & Mike Scot Re-Edit)
Richard Earnshaw is an understanding in (old school) house music. Search for his name on Youtube, especially if you’re from the UK. Hed Kandi-ish Nostalgia guaranteed. Together with Mike Scot he recently made a remix on Daft Punk’s ‘Around The World’. Daft Punk’s classic together with some piano chords from that soulful/deephouse era: Win.
I Needed You
Two weeks ago Brittish Om Unit released this interesting Glitch-hop remix on Kramphaft’s ‘I Needed You’. The remix sounds a lot like the original (same lead and some vocal samples). The most notable change is that it features a solid base (geeks: deep sub/saw side-chained to a 85bpm four-on-the-floor beat) that’s a lot more tuneful. After having it up on Soundcloud or a few days, generating around 7000 plays, Om Unit flipped the download switch on it.

Lonely Town (Keadz Remix)
Another remix. On fLako’s ‘Lonely Town’ from the ‘Carving Away The Clay‘ EP. The remix is composed by the French/Belgian duo Keadz. They sped up the remix and the vocals from the original version are completely cut up. Nice rework!
Genre-wise, Flosstradamus is all over the place. The Chicago-based duo has churned out Juke, House, and Nu-Disco just to name a few things. They’ve been experimenting a bit more. The guys have run a modest offensive on their social pages, encouraging their followers to heart their new track ‘Total Recall’ on Hype Machine. It worked, and for the first time the Popular chart is topped by some sort of Crunk/Hardtrance blend. (Which by the way is a pretty solid production, no doubt.) Just guessing, but didn’t one of Major Lazer’s most recent tracks also remind us of that same genre? Oh, and Munchi is in on it too. Guess we’re doing the nineteen-nineties all over again this year..
I Don’t Know What To Do (Erkka Remix)
After everybody’s mum blogged about this, we still gotta post it. It’s an unreleased remix of The Magician‘s ‘I Don’t Know What To Do’ featuring Danish vocalist Jeppe. For some reason the remix wasn’t featured on the official ‘Don’t Know What To Do’ EP, but mr. Magician put it up for free grabs. Might not be as catchy as Magician’s characteristic piano samples, but still works very well.

Miss You (NEUS Remix)
Seven months ago French electro-rockers NEUS took a break from their usual rowdy stuff to make a remix on Trentemøller’s ‘I Miss You’. This week they are allowing you to download this remix. You can still hear that they’re not to big on subtlety (especially the beat samples still kick like a mule), but this remix is a nice change for them. The track evolves all the way to the end and it has a good buildup. Thumbs up for slowing down.

Harder Dream
Almost a year ago Mord Fustang made his debut with the release of ‘The Electric Dream’. British remixer pudlik took the track and added a slightly pitched up vocal of Daft Punk’s ‘Harder Better Faster Stronger’. Simple, Clean, Effective. Pudlik is sharing a download link for his nifty dj tool, which is up here.

Up All Night (LKiD Edit)
Over the past few months we’ve seen a lot of early nineties house elements emerging in modern music. That also goes for Jack Beats and John B’s ‘Up All Night’, released in March last year. Especially when you listen to the breakdown parts. The track came up on our radar again after LKiD, a UK remixer based in Leeds, did a playful little re-edit on that track.

Funeral
Although the website it titled ‘Weareshura.com’, I’m pretty sure London’s Shura is just one female musician collaborating with different producers. She (or they) names her music ‘Night Folk’, which comes down to traditional folk with a lot of (atmospheric) electronic elements. At least, that’s what she usually does. Her most recent recording uploaded to Soundcloud is titled ‘Funeral’ and features nothing more than vocals and an acoustic guitar. Apparently the recording was made when she was only sixteen years old.

We Stay Up All Night (Star Slinger Remix)
Looks like this is going to be a UK-only post. Star Slinger (Manchester) posted his latest remix yesterday. A mellow progressive dubstep take on the Dutch House influenced production ‘We Stay Up All Night’ by Buraka Som Sistema (featuring Blaya and Roses Gabor).

My Crunk De Gaulle
No need to tell you anything more about Justin Timberlake, Timbaland or the ‘FutureSex/LoveSounds’ album. You know it. On the other hand, LA-based Edward Ma might be a new name for you. You might know him by his stage name edIT or as one third of glitch-hop outfit The Glitch Mob. Frail Limb Purity took the ‘My Love’ acapella of one and the ‘Crunk De Gaulle’ instrumental of the other for a well-blended mashup. Not really sure about the part with TI’s vocals, but the JT parts are really nice.

2011 was the year of relatively young music innovators. Today’s selected artists have something in common: they all sound experimental yet quite approachable. The following innovators proved being the most progressive singers and producers in (mainstream) music today. This is where we hope music will go in the coming year. And beyond.
Alex Clare – Up All Night
One of those innovators is Diplo. The guy who is really good in juggling with telephones also knows how to produce. Together with Switch he is Major Lazor and he’s also the producer of the debut album of Alex Clare, who is signed at their label Mad Decent. With ‘Lateness of the hour’, London singer Alex Clare delivers a great album giving dubstep a soulful edge. In this list we chose the moombahton-ish track ‘Up all night’ above his hitsingle ‘Too close’.
James Blake – Wilhelm Scream
James Blake made worldwide fame with his album, becoming a popstar by producing and singing in his bedroom. (At least, that’s what he did during his studies. We expect he moved on to something bigger in the meanwhile.) Already in January, we knew that his album would end up in our year-end list. And it did. His cover of Feist’s ‘Limit to your love’ proved that this guy is talented as hell and his postmodern and experimental album is just amazing. Every note, sigh or glitch is there for a reason. ‘Wilhelm Scream’ was his second hit.
Jamie Woon – Shoulda
A personal favourite of 2011 is Jamie Woon. This singer from England made a few beautiful songs. Especially ‘Lady Luck’ and ‘Shoulda’ (posted above) are one of our favourites on his album called ‘Mirrorwriting’. Where his earlier work is kind of mysterious, ‘Mirrorwriting’ sounds more familiar and accessible. Woon’s voice and productions are pleasant and warm. Definitely worth listening.
The Weeknd – The Morning
Guess that no one really knew the Toronto singer Abel Tesfaye in 2010. That’s one thing he certainly changed this year, with some great help from the interwebs. This guy stands on the crossroad between indie-music and mainstream, introducing a new kind of R&B. Critically embraced by us due to the innovative productions on ‘House of Balloons’, ‘Echoes of Silence’ and ‘Thursday’, which were all free albums. It’s just a perfect mix of ballads, beats and weirdness.
SBTRKT – Wildfire
SBTRKT (Substrakt) is a traditional producer – named Aaron Jerome – who is joined by guest singers / vocalist such as Sampha, Jessie Ware and Roses Gabor. Actually, we were quite suprised by his album. We knew him for a few dubstep remixes of existing songs, but his 2011-album exceeded those. He made a dance-album that goes way beyond the dancefloor. In this list we chose ‘Wildfire’, the biggest hit on the release.
Jhameel – Waves
Screaming, yelling and completely melodramatic Jhameel entered our lives in 2011. And while that might seem a complete burden and annoying as hell, we didn’t care. We actually liked it. ‘Shut up’, was the first song we heard of the young, incredibly artistic American and he has since given us loads of stuff to think about. One of his last tracks, Waves, was more like a weird kind of ballad. You see, Jhameel keeps reinventing himself and thereby all kinds of genres. And if he keeps on doing that, great things are to come.
Jacques Greene – Another Girl
First thing that sprung to mind when first hearing of Jacques Greene? Great name. First thing that sprung to mind upon hearing his music? Great style. So that’s mostly great things for the Londoner who came to the scene in 2011. His music kind of reminds of well, everything. It’s like a mixed up version of dubstep, ambient, house, drum n bass and trip hop. Somehow Greene just manages to make one, super addicting style out of all that. One can only give him immens amounts of credit for that.
Birdy – Skinny love
First of all, if a 14 year old girl listens to Bon Iver, that deserves some serious kudos. Second of all, if that 14 year old actually manages to sing a Bon Iver song that deserves even more of those kudo things. Third of all, if that girl sings that song so well she actually gains more traction than Bon Iver that just deserves a place on this list. Who would’ve thought covers could be this fun? Birdy thought so, and now even the gurls from all the cool girl forum think so. A girl from 1996 is now an innovator. Where has time gone?
Flux Pavilion – Superbad
In this list we featured a lot of English innovators. Here is another one: Flux Pavilion – known to his friends by the name of Joshua Steele. And he isn’t superbad at all. Actually, we think he rocks and we want to make it up with him for not putting him in our dubstep chart earlier this week. We’re sorry mr. Flux. Forgive us. The BBC nominated him for “sound of 2012”, but we think he proved his skills already this year. His ‘I can’t stop’ was sampled by Kanye West and Jay-Z on their album called ‘Watch the throne’ and his hits ‘Bass Canon’ and ‘Superbad’ smashed the Jackplug Headquarters to smithereens.
Jamie XX and Gil Scott-Heron – I’ll Take Care of You
Jamie XX made himself known to the world on August 27th this year, when BBC’s Pete Tong finally featured the young Dj in one of the BBC Essential Mixes.
The percussionist and turntablist from The XX produced a lot of good music this year. Most notably his remix album on Gil Scott-Heron’s ‘We’re New Here’. The album featured ‘NY You’re Killing Me’ (Featuring Hoodie Allen) and ‘I’ll Take Care Of You’ (which was later released with additional vocals by Drake and Rihanna).

Well, that concludes all those end-of-the-year-charts for us. Hope you enjoyed ‘em. Just one more Honorable Mention: definitely this.

Before reading and listening here’s a warning: this post is going to be all over the place, music-wise at least. The one thing in this list that is supposed to give order, the fact that it’s all bands, isn’t even completely true. Just think of this list as good (band-ish) music. Anyway, here’s some of our favorite songs by ‘bands’ this year:
Boy and Bear – Milk & Sticks
These Australians know how to make a lover of folk-rock smile. Releasing their first full EP ‘Moonfire’ earlier this year, the guys from Sydney don’t make anything groundbreaking or never seen before. They just make really fun music. ’Milk & Sticks’ was the first single of that debut album and sounds like equally fun band Mumford and Sons collaborated with Oasis and The Avett Brothers, or something.
The Horrible Crowes – Behold the Hurricane
When Brian Fallon decided to do more stuff besides The Gaslight Anthem one could only be happy and upon hearing the great name, The Horrible Crowes, one could only think about an evil version of The Counting Crowes. It is actually quite a bit like that. The album ‘Elsie’ came out this year and ‘Behold the Hurricane’ was the first and only single so far. It seriously is like Fallon took the Counting Crowes and mashed them up with Tom Waits. Great.
Joe Bonamassa – Dust Bowl
Look, there is the catch in this ‘band’ post. Joe Bonamassa is only one name and usually that is not a complete band. However, in Bonamassa’s case he almost always plays with a band, so we stick him in here. Of course you already know Bonamassa, he is a household name. And of course he is one of the best guitarists of his generation (beware he is only 34, which is ridiculous considering his status). Dust Bowl is as grimey and rough as ever, on the other end it is as slick as only Bonamassa can make it.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Fleet Foxes – The shrine / An Argument
From the rough, blueslike tunes of Bonamassa to the symphonic, campfire, jamboree vibes of the Fleet Foxes. The Shrine / An Argument kind of shows how good, but also how weird the Fleet Foxes can be. You see, Robin Pecknold’s voice almost, but not at all at the same time, cracks when he sings ‘sunlight over me no matter what I do’, which is one of the most beautifully sung lines of the year. (No discussion, this is a science fact!) And then the cacophony starts, which is completely weird, but somehow there is this feeling that it’s transcendent for folk music. If there is one band that can pull that of, it’s the Fleet Foxes.
Complimentary MP3:
Destroyer – Kaputt
“wasting your days
chasing some girls
alright, chasing cocaine
through the backrooms of the world
all night”

That is some lyric, isn’t it? It is this weird, yet strangely relevant, lyric that highlights Destroyer, fronted by lead singer Dan Bejar. The poetical feeling of Kaputt make even more sense when a jazzy sax comes in and makes the whole mood kind of ambient. You just wanna kick back, and go through the backrooms of the world.

Honorable mention: this and this.

Just before the holidays, Julius Myth returns with a mixtape titled ‘TV Dinners’. It’s the fourth mixtape for the New Yorkian super-linguist. After being pleasantly surprised by his last mixtape ‘Day Of The Deadbeats’, I think this new mixtape deserves a proper listen..

Click here to view the embedded video.

Years Lata
This is the kind of Hip Hop you’re in for: The mixtape is fully produced by NYC-based Years Lata. And Myth’s producer has a classic approach when it comes to producing Hip Hop: Nas, Big L, DJ Premier, J Dilla and The Alchemist are some of his main influences.

So in true tradition there’s a lot of sampling going on. (And if you’ve seen the video above, you might have heard correctly. There has never ever been as much sleigh bell samples on a proper Hip Hop mixtape as on ‘TV Dinners’.) I’m guessing most of the productions are entirely sample-based, without adding too much MIDI-based action (Such as Korgs, Moogs, etc.).

Melodic
Still, there’s a lot of tunefulness in Years Lata’s work. Which is perfect for Myth’s style of rapping. At the risk of being completely wrong: his flow sounds a bit like Kid Cudi. Modest, intelligent and very melodic. Julius Myth is both a clever writer and a talented, mature rapper. On top of that, the producer treats the vocals perfectly. Sometimes layered and in full stereo, sometimes just one vocal track centered in the middle. On the other end, the rapper works creatively with vocal samples injected by the producer. Just listen to the track ‘Rainbows’ below.

And I think this is what makes ‘TV Diners’ work. Creative rapper meets skilled producer. The two Werfmor signees Operate like left foot, right foot. Or to stick with the terms: Killer combo, like TV and dinner. Here are some of the tracks from the mixtape:

Life Has Changed
The second track on the mixtape is titled ‘Life Has Changed’ and is a pretty good example of how melodic Julius Myth can be. 48 seconds in the track is the first time on ‘TV Dinners’you can hear the linguist’s hallmark: He perfectly knows his way in the grey area between rapping and singing.

Rainbows
In ‘Rainbows’ the producer is playing around with vocal samples. It sounds like Years Lata used a pitched up vocal cut from Louis Armstrong (‘Somewhere over the rainbow’?) but I could be wrong. Perfect combination of rapping and sampling.

Smoke pt. 2
The Anthem. The catchiest track on the mixtape is about one of the biggest cliches in Hip Hop: the smoke. For an Amsterdam-based blog, we really don’t smoke that much at all. But we can relate to this track, which could be an anthem for any young tourist visiting Holland.

In a nutshell: Talented rapper and producer make incredibly credible Hip Hop. Download the mixtape, and give it a few plays. Tracks will grow on you, as the mixtape has a high replay value. It’s the only reason you should still be listening to sleigh bells in the months to follow.

While in 2009 only a happy few were listening to it, 2010 saw a definite international breakthrough of Dubstep as a full grown music genre. 2011 must be the year that Dubstep manifested itself as mainstream EDM. The journey started in a few dark basements filled with sweaty people, the genre finally ended up at the wedding of your aunt Suzie.

So we could feature tons of tracks here. Dubstep meant a comeback for Nu-Metal granddaddies Korn. Half the hip-hop scene dropped a verse over a 140BPM bass wobble. Even the Britneys and the Biebers had a cheap shot at Dubstep. It became huge. Every track in the Billboard chart ended up having several official or unofficial dubstep remixes. To be honest, most of them were pretty shit. But let’s not go there, there was enough good Dubstep to go round in 2011. We found a few chunky m&m’s in an empty lunchbox. Bon appetit.
Rusko – Everyday (Netsky Remix)
Released early this year, The Netsky remix on Rusko’s ‘Everyday’ quickly became a summer anthem over at Jackplug HQ. Some people might refer to this type of Dubstep as ‘Drumstep’, which basicly comes down to Dubstep at a faster BPM rate (around 175, like Drum and Bass). The entire Everyday EP was officially released in April by Mad Decent. But the label is giving the Netsky remix away for free on Soundcloud.
Complimentary MP3:
Skrillex – First Of The Year (Equinox)
All hail king Skrillex, 2011′s undisputed ruler of Dubstep. Almost every song that had ‘Skrillex’ in it’s title rose to the top of Hypem’s Popular Chart and Soundcloud’s hottest tracks chart this year. For good reason, as the about-to-be-24-year-old handles his productions with great care and surgical precision. Perfect round subs, just enough high frequencies and basslines that sound like they’re going to eat you. But like eating a stock pile of pancakes every day, the same Skrillex recipe over and over again gets boring. This might be the biggest critic going around on the biggest thing that happened to dubstep this year. So it’s a relief so hear something different on his most recent EP ‘Bangarang’. It features a track titled ‘Summit’ (leaded earlier as ‘Breathe’) and has a few seconds of Ellie Goulding in it. Smooth synthwork instead of roaring basslines. Let’s see if Skrillex re-invents himself even further in 2012.
Skream ft. Sam Frank – Anticipate
A huge year for UK super producer Skream. He and his partner in crime Benga are having their own show on BBC radio. Skream’s music is all over the charts, as well as Magnetic Man. But the biggest thing must be the coming of a little Skream baby boy on the 13th of July. So his anthem of the year is ‘Anticipate’, which is a poem he wrote for his kid and later made into a track released on Skrillex’ OWSLA label.
Nero – Promises
Nero also set an international highscore this year. Most notably are their tunes ‘Promises’ and ‘Crush On You’ (Don’t know about you, but we recognized it from a song by a tiny Wackstreetboy back in 1997). Next in line for London duo is their heavily Eighties influenced release ‘Reaching Out’, which came out on the 16th of December. Too late to make a great impact on 2011, but definitely a thing to watch in 2012.
Cassius – I <3 U So
French EDM veterans Cassius also played a good part in the international Dubstep scene with their track ‘I <3 U sO' released on Ed Banger in March. The track was heralded by a fantastic app on the iPhone, good example of super original promotion for an EP. The result of the app is shown in the video above, the official video for 'I <3 U So'.
